From Whitby town centre follow the signs for Sandsend (A174). Just as you leave Whitby, and just before the golf club turn right on to Links View. Head straight across the next junction down Valley Road. The best place to park is next to the steps down to Upgang beach (see the photo on the parking link).

Upgang is a small beach on the north side of Whitby. It is sandwiched inbetween Whitby Sands and Sandsend Beach, just next to Whitby golf coarse. The beach is as snag free as any beach gets and is well known for the surf it throws up. This can often make it a very easy and productive area for fishing, especially during summer.

Access to the beach is via the steps and walkways which have been built into the side of the hill overlooking the beach. They are definitely not for people with mobility problems.

Passing through the golf club is a track which leads down to this area just behind the slipway (from where this photo is taken). Some anglers park their vehicles here. However, the track is a recognised as part of the Cleveland Way footpath and to access it by car the gate from the main road must be opened. This gate clearly states that the path is for emergency vehicles only. If you decide to park here you take full responsibility for your actions.
